The town's name is derived from the anglicized form of the name of a village of the Jaega, a Native American group that lived in the area before European settlement.
Hobe Sound was once called Picture City. In the early 1920s, the area was known as Olympia because much of the 12,000-acre Gomez Spanish land grant was bought by the Olympia Improvement Corporation. The Olympia developers had already built a water plant, electric and ice plants, miles of improved roads, and railway stations. The plan was to create a town in the Greek style, where motion pictures could be produced. Street names included Zeus, Saturn, Mercury, Mars, Olympus, Venus, Pluto, and Athena. The town school was called Picture City School.
The developers promoted Picture City as a "motion picture colony" that would rival California's best. They offered opportunities for real estate speculation and planned a residential community with movie star homes. However, devastating hurricanes in 1926 and 1928, followed by the Great Depression, put an end to these ambitious plans. By 1932, a group of Jupiter Island residents formed the Hobe Sound Co. and bought what was left of Olympia and Picture City. Today, only a few remnants of Picture City remain, including several concrete light poles along Dixie Highway in Hobe Sound.
