Connect a microphone to your computer

- Check your computer's microphone port: Before you begin, locate your computer's microphone port. This will usually be a 1/8 inch port or, in some cases, a USB port.
- Purchase an adapter if needed: If your microphone has an XLR jack (a triangle of prongs), you will need to purchase an adapter cable or converter box. XLR microphones require a cable that converts the jack into a 1/8 inch port, a converter box that changes it to USB, or a mixer. If your microphone has a quarter-inch jack, you will need an adapter cable that converts it to USB or 1/8 inch size.
- Connect the microphone: Plug the microphone into the adapter or converter, and then connect it to the computer's microphone port or, alternatively, the headphone port.
- Test the microphone: Once connected, test the microphone to ensure it is working properly. On Windows, go to Start > Settings > System > Sound. Select the microphone in Input and check the input volume while speaking into the microphone. If you are using a Mac, click on the Apple icon and go to System Preferences.

Use a sound recorder application
Many computers come with a pre-installed voice recorder application, such as Sound Recorder on Windows operating systems (3.1 and up) and QuickTime on macOS. If your computer doesn't have a pre-installed application, you can download one from an app store or use an online recorder.
To use Sound Recorder, first make sure you have a sound card and microphone installed. Then, open the application by selecting Start, then Programs, then Accessories, then Entertainment, and finally Sound Recorder. Alternatively, you can select Start and search for Sound Recorder. If you're using a desktop, plug your microphone into the jack on the rear end of your computer.
Once Sound Recorder is open, click the Record button (or the big red button) and start speaking. If you need to pause, tap or select Pause. To resume recording, tap or select Record again. Edit the sound file
Once you have created your sound file, you may want to edit it to improve the sound quality or remove any mistakes. There are many free audio editing tools available to download, such as Audacity, WavePad Audio Editor, Power Sound Editor, and BeatCleaver. These tools can be used on computers and mobile devices, depending on the software.
To get started, open your chosen audio editor and import your audio file. Open the file to play
Once you have created and saved your audio file, you can open it to play it back. The process will differ depending on your operating system and the software you used to record.
Windows
